    Description

For Sale is this Yellow ware spittoon or cuspidor made by Bennington with a brown Rockingham glaze.
The spittoon or cuspidor would have provided a polite depository for those who chewed tobacco, as an alternative to spitting on the floor.
The spittoon dates to about 1870. It would have been made by Bennington Pottery in Vermont, which operated from 1850 to 1900.
The center hole would have allowed tobacco spit to slide into the base. The wide upper surface would have allowed for imperfect aim.
The side hole would have been used to wash out the debris.
Approx 7.25" Opening Across the Top and 4" Tall
